Aladdin Cleaners and Laundry, Inc. is a family owned business that has existed for 66 years. Tim Barr is the third generation owner-manager who takes pride in carrying on the legacy of his parents and grandparents.
In 1950 when Gladys McNeal assumed full responsibility for operating Aladdin Cleaners, women-owned dry cleaning businesses were extremely rare. With enthusiastic determination, Mrs. McNeal overcame challenges including equipment maintenance problems and physically demanding working hours. The original business, located in a small building in Woodlawn, grew steadily. In 1957 Mrs. McNeal opened a new plant in Mountain Brook Village and another in Eastwood Mall in 1960. By 1963 a new building was constructed in Woodlawn.
In 1967 Mrs. McNeal and Aladdin Cleaners received national recognition when Senator John Sparkman described Aladdin as “An Alabama Success Story” and entered the story in the Congressional Record.
In 1990 Mrs. McNeal relinquished her title of President and many of her responsibilities to her only child, Jean Barr. Under Mrs. Barr’s management, the company continued to grow and prosper. Following Jean’s death in 2004, her sons Robert and Tim Barr became the operating managers. Gladys McNeal, now in her nineties, still plays an active part in the business.
At Aladdin Cleaners “We care for your clothes”, is not only a slogan; it is a practice that has followed three generations. Aladdin Cleaners is a true example of a vibrant, successful family business and we look forward to continued growth with the next generation at the helm.
